This research was conducted under the circumstance of national curriculumreform in China in2001, which reflected a educational trend of shiftingteacher-centred approach to learner-centred approach. As the learner-centred approachhas been advocated and widely accepted in China educational circles, I was deeplyconcerned about the implementation of the learner-centred ideology in word meaningteaching. With these concerns in my mind, I tried to form a model of word meaningteaching based on the learner-centred approach and Gairns and Redman’s techniques.I was very fortunate to have a opportunity to conduct the experimental research inXining Siyuan senior middle school in2012. Therefore, this paper will try to search asuitable model underlying the learner-centred ideology in terms of the practicalsituation and advices from other teachers, and the author will use it in his class for onesemester and try to collect data, to conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis, tofind out if there are differences and what these differences are.This thesis starts with a brief introduction, which presents concise descriptions ofbackground, significance and research questions. And then in chapter two, the authorelaborates the review of vocabulary knowledge and learner-centred approach,respectively. The part of words and their meanings mainly introduces the theory ofLeech, Lyons and Sang Siming, and literature review of learner-centred approachprimarily follows Professor Wang Qiang’s book, Primary EFL in China: Teachers’Perceptions and Practices with Regard to Learner-centredness. And in chapter threeand chapter four, data was collected and analyzed by means of Contrastive AnalysisMethod and SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions). In chapter five,conclusions and suggestions are presented based on above analysis. After theexperimental teaching, the model of word meaning teaching was proved that thereexists differences compared with the teacher-centred approach, but their differencesare not significant. I hope this research can be a meaningful try for exploring a betterway in word meaning teaching underlying learner-centredness..
