Abstract/Summary:
Carl Gustav Jung argues that self is the subject of the whole mind. The growth of self, which also means the individuation, is a process of self-realization that implies the acquisition of the complete personality. Jung thinks that the ideal individuation is a process that has a trend from the unity without uniqueness to a unique unity. The unity and the uniqueness are two significant factors in the development of self. Unity has the unique side, and the uniqueness is based on unity. However, the divergence may haunt here. If the unity and the uniqueness lose each other, the growth of self may go along on a wrong way. The growth of self requires the support of cultural environment. Proper cultural environment can support the growth of self. Otherwise, disadvantageous one may prevent the development of self. Therefore, self, which is not unchangeable, has a growing process. Compared with the adult’s self, the child’s self is immature, which means that the child’s self is at an early stage when child’s conscious ego is growing from the unconscious self. The immaturity means a growing potential in child’s self from a positive perspective instead of a passive view. The unconscious self is the root of child’s self, which means that child’s conscious ego is growing from the unconscious self. At the same time, the child’s self requires the support of culture. To some extent, child education can be regarded as a miniature of child culture. Therefore, the growth of child’s self demands child education which is under child perspective other than the adult view, respects child instinct and provides proper environment for children.Child education can support the growth of child’s self. Whereas,"the artificial ripening education"-one kind of divergent education which is to accelerate the ripening of child-could lead the development of child’s self to a wrong way. The ’artificial ripening education" attempts to "accelerate" the evolution of child’s conscious ego by rejection and depression of the unconscious self, which is just as3ulling up seedlings to help them grow. Education that can support the growth of child’s self may also prevent the development of child’s self. Obviously, supporting he growth of child’s self is the responsibility of education. The key point of supporting the growth of child’s self lies in the growth of the unconscious self, which neans that if education urges to promote the growth of child’s conscious ego, there is10way but boosting the growth of child’s unconscious self.
