Based on the domestic and foreign scholars research results of formulaic theory, the present paper took the American psychologist Flower&Hayes (1981) Cognitive Process Model of Writing as a starting point, applied formulaic theory and lexical chunk methods to language teaching, and did an empirical study on the writing teaching aiming to explore an effective new way to improve the English writing skills of students of vocational schools in China.The research lasted for a semester. The composition examinations of the experimental group and comparative group in pre-test and post-test were taken. The data was collected and analyzed by social science statistical software SPSS13.0. We also selected part of the students in the experimental class to interview survey. The results of the research show that:(1) Formulaic theory can effectively enhance and improve vocational students’ English writing skills. After the teaching experiment of a term, we found that experimental group’s writing performance, the amount of lexical chunks in the writing and writing fluency were obviously increased than before.(2) The learning of Lexical chunks is an effective means to solve the current problems of vocational students’ writing.
