The seventies and eighties of last century, China began to implement "one-child policy". This not only makes excessive population increase under control in order to maintain a stable low fertility level, but also contribute to China’s social, economic and cultural development. However, the policy consequences and negative features are gradually revealed while we enjoy the benefit of "one-child policy". Recent years, death rate of the only child is rising, so is the number of broken family. Families that lost their only child have caused great concerns from government, social organizations, experts, scholars and etc. although we have started to help these families with disabled only child, but it’s still need more efforts to solve the problem especially to the families that lost their only child. They not only have to face the pain of losing their child, but also the enormous pressure of being lonely when they get old, and difficulties of economic, medical, pension and other aspects of life. To solve this problem, we need the support of the whole society instead of relying on policy support from government. The author consulted a project of Hubei Province, a research on policy support for families with disabled only child or lost only child. Then analyzed the structure and function of social support for these families with combining of quantitative and qualitative method. At last, the author found a breakthrough to solve the problem through the idea of "broken-imbalance-bridge" for these broken families. This is not only a supplement to the research on families that lost their only child in academic field, but also a reference for the formulation and implementation of government policies to sever these families better. There is not much study on social support for families that lost their only child, but the author argues that social support has a significant meaning for these families, and it would be a research trend in the future. This thesis gives a comprehensive exposition of social support for families that lost only child, finds out the defects and problems of formal social support and informal social support. Then, analyzes economical functional and communicational imbalance for these families due to the lack of social support. At last, the author presents that social support reconstruction is a must in order to rebuild these broken families, and makes some feasible suggestions.
