Reading is the most important means of language learning. Reading comprehension is a great challenge for the students, especially for the middle school students. It is urgent for both students and teachers to improve the reading ability. Students should be taught strategies to enhance their reading ability.Although a lot of researches about learning strategies were conducted in the university and high school. As one of learning strategies, cognitive strategies are rarely applied in middle school. Under the guidance of Ausubel’s Theory of Meaningful Learning and Anderson’s cognitive strategies, Questionnaire method and experimental method are employed in the research. The model of cognitive strategies from Anderson is used. The result of the survey shows the necessity of reading strategy use through the training of cognitive strategies. And the collected data is analyzed by using the SPSS13.0PC Window Program.This study aims to verity that cognitive strategies can improve reading comprehension of Junior High School students. Three key research questions would be answered through the experiment:(1)What kind of reading strategies are the junior middle school students using most and least?(2) Can the cognitive strategies help the students improve their reading comprehension?(3) What are the changes of the students through the training with cognitive strategies?This thesis targets at the effectiveness of cognitive strategies training on reading comprehension for Junior Middle School students through the use of cognitive strategies. Two classes of students from Grade2of a Junior Middle School (N=72) were assigned to a control and an experimental class. However, only the experimental class received cognitive strategies training during the course of the semester. It took3-month period of time to finish the experiment. The results of the study show that cognitive strategies training has a significant positive effect on the reading comprehension of Junior Middle School students.
