Many scholars and educational professors have done lots of studies on personal factors that influence incidental vocabulary acquisition, including topic familiarity, second language proficiency and vocabulary. But a few has taken account into the effects of second language proficiency on IVA and how to improve the second language proficiency. Therefore, to have a deeper understanding of IVA and its influence of second language reading proficiency on second language incidental vocabulary acquisition in English reading in senior high school, this paper adopts the empirical approach to do the research. In addition, the paper discusses the effect of SLRP on incidental vocabulary acquisition in different reading tasks. The paper consists of five chapters.Chapter one gives a brief introduction of the background, significance and research questions of the research. Chapter two reviews theories and researches of IVA both in China and abroad. Besides, IVA in English reading in senior high school, second language proficiency and some related theories are also discussed. The paper also points out the limitations of the past researches. Chapter three describes the research methodology in detail, including research questions, participants, materials, instruments and research procedures. Excel and SPSS are used to analyze the data of the research. Chapter four analyzes the data and discusses the results. Based on the research results, the author proposes several suggestions on improving students’second language reading proficiency. Chapter five gives a conclusion of the whole research and points out limitations of the research.Through the research, it’s proved that second language reading proficiency has a positive influence on IVA in English reading in senior high school.In a word, this research enriches and develops the research on incidental vocabulary acquisition; it also contributes to the vocabulary teaching and English reading in senior high school. For students in senior high school, acquiring a word does not only mean knowing the meaning of the words, it also means mastering the pronunciation rules, property of words, fixed phrases and context.
