| Vocabulary is a crucial element in the process of learning English for the junior high school students. Most teachers and students feel the pressure of learning vocabularies in junior high school, but the traditional teaching methods can’t satisfy the students’ demands. Some people may be unfamiliar with this approach to learning words-- incidental vocabulary acquisition. It has been widely carried out in daily teaching. Therefore, the paper is trying to find effective methods to make students expand their vocabulary in the process of reading comprehension. Incidental vocabulary acquisition on English reading of junior high school students is a good trial to put the achievements of incidental vocabulary acquisition study into the practice of daily teaching or learning. It pays more attention to the dominant position of students during the period of learning vocabulary.Therefore, the thesis discusses the study of incidental vocabulary acquisition on English reading of junior high school students. The study is based on 90 middle school students come from Shenyang. The methodologies include questionnaire, immediate test, delayed test and interview. The thesis applies some related theories, such as input hypothesis, depth of processing theory, schema theory and cumulative vocabulary acquisition theory. The study of incidental vocabulary acquisition on English reading will be carried out in different experiments according to different reading tasks, reading materials and vocabulary sizes. After getting the results of experiments, the author uses the statistic tool SPSS to analyze the information.Through the study on incidental vocabulary acquisition in junior high school English reading, there are some major findings in the study. Firstly, junior high school students can have incidental vocabulary acquisition effectively in the process of reading. Secondly, the larger vocabulary size group in the experimental class can acquire more target words than the smaller one in the process of IVA through reading based on the information processing model. Thirdly, different reading tasks play different roles in IVA through reading which illustrates involvement load have influence on IVA through reading.The study of incidental vocabulary acquisition on English reading of junior high school students is worth studying and practicing. To some extent, learning vocabulary is not only depending on reciting but also exploring an efficient way to learn vocabulary through reading interesting materials. In this way, it can combine vocabulary and context through reading so that remember vocabulary easily. As for the teachers, they can emphasis on enlarging students’ vocabulary and improving students’ reading ability. Teachers should give students more instructions and reading techniques and tasks to improve the efficiency of IVA. |
