| One of American society’s major features is that the professional organizations have a significant impact on people’s life and work.The National Education Association, referred to as NEA, is such a teacher union As the largest American teacher union,NEA had an great effort to promote the professional development of teachers since its foundation in1857,and took it as the major target in the early development. Then since the mid-20th century, NEA had changed its original target and began to incline to the politics of protecting teachers’ rights and benifits after judging the hour and sizing up the situation. Therefore, this paper is intended to take this transformation as a turning point to research on the contemporary NEA’s protecting teachers’ right and benifits. Through this study, we can have a deeper understanding of NEA’s important role and great influence in protecting teachers’ right and benifits.There are four parts in this thesis:The introduction chapter raises the problem, reviews the related literature both at home and abroad, and based on which, proposes research method and thought;The second chapter presents the laws of teachers’rights and benifits in the United States Constitution and in the NEA Resolutions2010-2011;The third chapter concludes NEA’s operating methods to protect the teachers’ rights and benifits:recommend and apply collective bargaining after the transformation; consummate regulations of teachers’ pay, tenure, retirement and welfare; publish professional journals and attach importance to media;The fourth chapter analyses NEA concerns teachers’ pay to protect teachers’ rights and benifits. The contemporary circumstances of American teachers’ pay suggests the fact that teachers’ pay is lower than comparative professionals’ pay. NEA has constant controversy toward merit pay, thus the state and local affiliates of NEA follow what teachers really want and carry out campaigns to successfully protect teachers’ rights and benifits. |
