In today’s rapidly developing society, urban is an important aspect that is difficultto overlook. Urban development presented to the people the surface phenomena thatcannot be ignored, but other social phenomena and problems which exist in cities alsoaffect the development of the entire urban space. In the book, Race and the Shaping ofTwentieth-Century Atlanta, taking Atlanta as a carrier, Ronald H. Bayor studies theblack racial history in twentieth-century America. Based on Henry Lefebvre’s spatialtriad, this thesis would classify and elaborate the urban space of Atlanta by Bayor. Andthrough analyzing the racial issues and contradictions involved in this book, the thesiswould reveal the spatial imbalance caused by the space politics behind the racial issuesof Atlanta.Except for the part of introduction and conclusion, the whole thesis would bedivided into three chapters. The first chapter is to elaborate and analyze the spatialpractice of urban space involved in Bayor’s Atlanta, including white manipulation ofand black leaders’ spatial practice toward job space and city cervices. The secondchapter is to elaborate and analyze representational space of Bayor’s Atlanta. Thisdimension includes the residential space, health care space, and educational space. Thethird chapter of the thesis is to elaborate and analyze the resistance towardrepresentations of space of Atlanta in Bayor’s book. In a word, the spatial imbalance ofBayor’s Atlanta is the result of racially constructed space politics.
