Analysis On Space Politics Theory Of Doreen Massey

Doreen Massey(1944-2016)is a famous British radical geographer and Marxist female worker.On the basis of drawing lessons from and criticizing the traditional space theory,she combines industrial employment geography with political science to form a unique space theory from the perspective of micro-ism and feminism.The thesis starts from three aspects:The first part mainly introduces the theoretical background of Massey’s theory of space politics.Since the space turn,more and more scholars have focused their attention on space,Lefebvre’s theory of space production,David Harvey’s space-time compression,Sawyer’s third space and so on.The politicized moral of these space theories has formed a certain influence on Massey.Under this background,Massey began to construct his own theoretical system of space politics.The second part summarizes the main contents of Massey’s theory of space politics.Massey explains the new understanding of space,the division of labor,the geometry of power and the sense of global place.First of all,Massey gave the nature of spatial social relations,and took the spatial structure as a clue,starting from the geographical types of employment in Britain and the unequal development between regions,to study the theory of spatial production in a new way,and to see the difference of gender production in capitalist unequal production.In the process of studying social spatial production,capitalism deliberately creates spatial differences in the division of labor,in order to pursue spatial rights and constantly violate and interfere with people’s space and make it a subsidiary of capital space;Massey uses "power geometry" to endow the political attribute of space theory and calls for the construction of an open and accessible shared urban space to counter spatial injustice.Finally,Massey puts forward the theory of "global local sense ",looks at the process of globalization from the perspective of space,views the unity of opposites between globalization and locality correctly,and puts forward the simultaneous development of openness and closure.The third part uses the basic principle of historical materialism to make a scientific and objective analysis of Massey’s theory of space politics,and makes a contemporary reflection on his theory.The value of Massey’s theory of space politics lies in putting forward advanced and new local view,actively integrating global and local,calling for local openness and closeness,supplementing and expanding Marx’s historical materialism from the spatial dimension,and calling for reshaping the open and just gender space from the feminist perspective.Of course,its thought also has some limitations,its world city theory and feminist thought,although it reflects Massey’s focus on real politics,but its theory deviates from the historical materialism position,it will inevitably have a certain utopian color.In a word,Massey’s theory of space politics has profound reference significance from both theoretical and practical aspects,which is beneficial to the modernization of national governance,especially the coordinated development of urban and rural integration.However,because its thought has a certain utopian nature,we should objectively and scientifically absorb the reasonable elements in its thought to serve the construction of a harmonious society in our country and improve our theoretical consciousness and practical ability.
