Sustainable development is the product of the process which human cognize objective world. So far, it is the most reasonable, most prospective development view. People will extend it to the economy, culture, society and education, when they comprehend sustainable development to a certain extent. The concept of sustainable development in education is born in this background. The private university education in our country is born in the process of the educational system reform. Since our economic recovery in the eighty’s of last century, private education development is revival, not only achieved the goal of being bigger and stronger, and formed its own school characteristics in the continuing development. At present, private university has become an indispensable part of higher education in our country, which plays a positive effect on social progress and talent training. With promoting the popularization of higher education in our country and accelerating the process of the construction of a well-off society, private university is bound to have further development. However, the private university is facing many challenges at the beginning of development. Therefore, our priority is to solve these problems thoroughly at the moment.This paper discusses the responsibility、obligation and the function of our government in the process of sustainable development of private university, from the relative concepts and the theory of private university and government, by comparing and analysing the schools at home and abroad. Thp first chapter is the introduction, expounding the background and meaning of introducing the question, describing the relative research at home and abroad briefly, then developing and discussing of the paper. The second chapter reviews briefly on the related concepts、theories, and analyzes the mode and the function of overseas government promote the sustainable development in private university, and the inspiration to China. The third chapter, comparing and analysing the private universities at home and abroad, it points out the breakthrough point in the sustainable development of private universities in our country, and the role of our government functions in them, based on the current situation of private universities in our country. The fourth chapter based on the above analysis gives advices of promoting the sustainable development of private university in our country from the angle of the government, aiming several breakthrough points above, promotes the private university in our country to a healthy and sustainable development.
