In English And Comparative Analysis Of News Leads Translation Strategies

The news lead has three main functions in news coverage, namely coming straightto the point, generalizing the whole text and attracting readers’ interests. Due to theChinese and Western differences in language and culture, the news lead is bound toreflect the differences between Chinese and English. The thesis chooses Nida’sphilosophy of translation and Halliday’s cohesion theory as guiding theories. Nida’sphilosophy of translation is the main guiding theory. It directs the research from theperspectives of the viewpoints of language and culture, functional equivalence and theprocess of translation. As the supplement, Halliday’s cohesion theory is used to enrichthe standpoints about text in Nida’s philosophy of translation. Under the guidance ofNida’s philosophy of translation, and with the research methods of enumeration andcontrastive analysis, the present thesis compares and analyzes Chinese and Englishnews leads in vocabulary, syntax and text, forming the equivalences of vocabulary,syntax and text Finally, the paper points out that naturalization is the main strategy andforeignization is the supplement in the process of translating Chinese news leads intoEnglish ones, which can promote the spread of information better.
