In the West, discussion about the evil nature of human occurs since ancient times, what is evil? What is the source of evil? The godfather, theologian and bishop Augustingave an answer from the source and led the direction of the entire Western Christianity. At the initial development of Christian, innumerable apostles and the apologistswrite books. After Christianity became the state religion of Rome, the patristicphilosophy was booming. The rational spirit of Greek philosophy and the devout faithof the apostles inspired the Latin Fathers greatly, so they made enormous contributionto the commentary on doctrine as well as the development of theological philosophy.Augustin of hippo is undoubtedly the representative of medieval patristic philosophy, ashe tried to find a balance between appropriate in theology and philosophy, and userational thinking of philosophy to explain the theological belief. This paper is mademainly from my understanding to the evil concepts of Augustin, which leads me to thegeneration of evil of Augustin--original sin and evil essence--free will, and at last Iknow that Augustin finally eliminated the evil–the answer to Grace. The book "On free will", is mainly about Augustin who is against the Manichaeansabout its evil view. On the contrary, Augustin believes that God is the creator of theworld, he is kind, perfect and noble and he cannot be the source of evil. Consideringthat there should be one person who shall be responsible for the evil, thus, Augustinintroduced the source of evil--original sin--the essence of evil, free will to show hisown point of view. He looks for the real source of evil, explores the nature of evil–theimperfect free will. His ultimate goal is to find a way to deal with evil, namely theelimination of evil--grace. They believe that people can only be saved in God’s grace. Then the grace includes subjective initiative as well as the human free will, which isso-called “Cooperation of God and Man”. But later in the Reservation of Saints,Augustin put the sovereignty of God at the first place, and man’s free will at the second place, which is that with the limited rationality of human, they don’t understand thewisdom of god. Only in the grace of God’s glory, can people get real freedom.
