Morass Survival - On The Buddhist Novel Phenomenon In Intellectual Dilemma

Since the1980s, Dramatic changes have taken place in every field in China’s political, economic, social, and ideological. All the pains in social transformation period spread to everyone, especially on the intellectuals. In face of the social reality with commercialism, the prevails of materialism, beliefs collapse and diversified values, intellectuals generally feel loss and no adaptation. This paper gives an example based on the image of intellectuals in Jia Pingwa’s novels since the1980s, through observation and analysis of their state of life and spirit outlook, we found that they generally facing the survival problem and spiritual crisis of mentally rootless, career fruitless and have nothing to rely on their emotion, also has a strong emotions of emptiness and confused. The reasons for these difficulties on the one hand from the intellectuals themselves. Specialization makes them buried their heads in ivory tower for full-time and disconnect with real life, no longer have a sense of social responsibility and public spirit; marginalized makes them lose the right to speak, self value is difficult to realize due to in dialogue with the political and public failures all the time; Urbanization makes them no longer return home, resulting in alienation and discomfort of rural society and rural affairs; Idealistic makes them addicted to the spirit of "Utopia", but suffered a cruel blow of individual failure and value destruction under the reality life. On the other hand, comes from Jia Pingwa’s aesthetic ideas and creative limitations. A strong conscious of suffering, hardship and tragedy makes him are accustomed to express to failure and incomplete in his creations. Combined with lack of philosophical thinking and ideas, strong petty-farmer consciousness and lack of independent spirit, Jia Pingwa is very difficult to break through his limitations thinking in understanding and grasp the image of intellectuals, leading intellectuals to a more open and richer possibilities for the future, but only let in fall in the mud of life.
