With the rapid development of technology and highly increasing productivity, people’smaterial life is becoming richer than ever. However, at the same time, the global ecological crisisis increasingly outstanding and people have to suffer from these consequences while enjoy thebenefits from modernization. In terms of this urgent situation, people have to reflect on their ownbehaviors. Because of the special territorial environment and culture, new period prairie novelwriters pay more attention to steppe ecosystem in their literary creation. They reflect on humanbehaviors in their writings to reveal the distortion of humanity, explore the relationship betweenhuman and nature, and look for a harmonious way for human’s development. This essay aims atnew period prairie novels based on ecological awareness and explores the ecological implicationin it through ecological criticism theory. The article is of six parts:The introduction part involves some definitions of related concepts in this essay, the statusquo of research on new period prairie novels, and the reason for choosing this topic. The writeralso analyses the motivation for the rise of ecological awareness in new period prairie novelsfrom the aspects of special territorial environment and culture.Chapter1discusses the "original prairie"--harmonious prairie in new period prairie novelsin many aspects including enchantment of grassland, harmonious coexistence of human andnature and that of human and animals. The "original scenery" of prairie is a symbol of poeticresidence. By pursuing harmonious prairie the writers illustrate their affirmers on positiveecological concepts, which reflects writers’ ultimate care for the survival of both nature andhuman.Chapter2discusses what the new period prairie novels write about the status quo ofecological crisis in prairie, how deep they had explored the root of imbalance in prairie, and thecultural reflections drawn from those things by writers. Firstly, by analyzing the texts, the writersthink over the ideological roots of causing ecological crisis in prairie and criticize one kind ofnature attitude which believes in conquer and control. Secondly, by deeply analyzing therelationship among industry, technology and prairie ecology, the writers show their introspectionon modern civilization. Thirdly, the new period prairie writers endeavor to depict invasion offarming culture to prairie and they think deeply about the confliction between these two kinds ofcivilizations.Chapter3illustrates the collapse of prairie spirits. This kind of collapse is both personal andnational, which involves alienation of human nature, change of nomadic lifestyle and dying ofthe nomadic culture. By keeping watching closely about prairie spirits, new period prairie novelsexpress writers’ concern about the gradual declination of nomadic culture in modernization.Chapter4includes the construction on the topic of recurrence in new period prairie novelswhich includes returning to nature, calling for the return of human nature and the possibilities ofreturn. The writer both fully confirms the reasonability of prairie ecological salvation andobjectively evaluates the difficulty of return. New period prairie novels fully express their ecological concepts by this construction.Epilogue part concludes the characteristic, value and deficiency in the writing of new periodprairie novel.
