In its process of modernity during the nineteenth century, Shanghai underwent the transformation of its social structure from the Sino-foreign division to Sino-foreign co-habitation which is part of the process. The Sino-foreign division started with the foundation of the concessions in Shanghai, and refugees who swarmed into those settlements because of wars and plagues geared up the social alternation. In the year of1862, due to the Taiping Rebellion and snow disasters around Shanghai, a large quantity of displaced persons escaped into the concessions who had a final impact on the Sino-foreign division and led to social instability. Therefore the social structure of Shanghai became Sino-foreign co-habitational forever. This thesis mainly concerns Jesuits’ deeds and influences in1862.Jesuits took activities in Shanghai in1862as follows. To begin with, they engaged themselves in social relieves to the refugees in Shanghai; Then memorial services for General Protet were hosted by the Jesuits; Next, a good relationship between Jesuits and French military armies was maintained; Finally, Jesuits retrieved the church possessions used to be owned by their predecessors.By making the analysis of activities mentioned above, this article mainly tends to reveal the Jesuits’ encouragements in missionaries in China of the Catholic beliefs and Jesuits’ effects on the change of Shanghai’s social structure into a Sino-foreign co-habitation pattern.
