| As a famous art collector during the modern period of China, Ye Gongchuo’s life passed a long station include late Qing dynasty, the Republic of China and the PRC. He had lived in Being, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hongkong for years. He had served the government of Qing dynasty, the Beiyang Government, the Sun Yat-sen Government, the National Government and the PRC Government separately. His collection insisted of paintings, calligraphies, bronze vessels, literal playthings and historical documents, he also made friends with poets, Buddhists, painters and other people of different social roles. His life could be seen as a refraction of the whole modern period.In1928, while Ye left his government responsibility and turned to literature and art, he soon occupied an significant space in the traditional art world. Just as his role in the Communication Department, he made different social roles and activities together. Through my dissertation of his collection, I’m trying to cast the reader’s sight to the historiography of tradition Chinese art, and to argue the relationship between historical documents and the appreciation of art.My dissertation has been divided into two part, in the first part I did research in the circumstance of Ye’s life, his way of appreciate and his collection, in the second part I made an supplementary edition of his chronological biography wrote in1946. I had put my energy more into the second part, and tried to uncover the microcosmic appearance of Ye and his times. |
