Since the full implementation of Chinese film industrialization policy, Chineseblockbusters featured in big investment, production, marketing, famous directors andstars, and high box office have drew great attention in Chinese film market. It hasalready been more than10years, since Hero, the very first real Chinese blockbusterhit the big screen in2002. In the past decade, with the steady growth in box office ofChinese film market as well as the historical achievements, Chinese blockbusters haveexerted great influence on the industrial pattern and historical trend of Chinese filmindustry. Yet at the same time, many problems have arisen, the most serious one ofwhich lies in the creation of the film. The maladies are epitomized as the ornate styles,the vacuous contents, the boring narratives, the inferior artistic quality, the lack ofcultural connotation, the confusion of cultural values, the absence of the present life,et. Given that the high concept film as a kind of production mode is the reason toexplain the prosperity in the Chinese film market, the persistent and healthydevelopment of the Chinese blockbusters are dependent on the effective balance ofcommercial value, artistic value and social value.We would find that the Chinese blockbusters as a whole have presented a moreexplicit evolution trend by the year of2007, the time when the Assembly released, ifwe study the development course of the the Chinese blockbusters in the past decade.The reason why this Master’s thesis has insisted on adopting the word of evolutionis that the thesis aims to illustrate the internal derived interactive relationship betweenthe Chinese blockbusters. The evolution is not identical but scattered, not one-way,but reduplicative. The evolvement has covered and involved the changes and newfeatures in the aspects of cultural characters, the types of subject, the aesthetic styles,the artistic qualities, the creative ideas, the creation methods, and the creativity of theChinese blockbusters.Beyond all doubt, there are many factors worked together to promote theevolution of the creation, such as, mutual restriction on audience and market, thediversification of creation subject, the influence of cultural environment, the comments, the awards orientation, etc.In recent years, the evolution of Chinese blockbusters contains varioussuccessful breakthroughs and beneficial explorations. The improvement of the barrenof thought and culture, the efficient extension of the subject type, the upgrade of theartistic quality, and the return to realism characters gradually are the representatives.Accordingly, the unsettled creation problems and newly appeared difficulties are alsobe varied. The lack of originality, the shortage of the initiative to use stereotype, theweakness of the narrative ability, and the cultural position shifting betweenlocalization and globalization are the typical examples.This thesis regards the Chinese blockbusters made from the year of2002to2012as the objects of the study. In the first part, the thesis divides the history of Chineseblockbusters into initial period and development period by the time node of the yearof2007. Then, the thesis relies on comparative study to differentiate and analyze themanifestations of the creative evolution of the Chinese blockbusters. The thesis hasdone some research on the evolution of the culture character, the extension of thesubject type, the steering of the aesthetic style, the ebb and flow of the creativity ofthe Chinese blockbusters to approve the argument. In the second part, the thesis fullyexplores the reason why the Chinese blockbusters evolved, and concludes thatrestriction on audience and market, the diversification of creation subject, theinfluence of cultural environment, the comments and awards orientation are the mainreasons. In the last part, the thesis conducts a comprehensive evaluation about gainand lost from the perspective of overall development of the Chinese blockbustersrationally aiming to provide a beneficial reference in the actual creation of Chineseblockbusters.
