The relationship between Chinese traditional painting and Chinese calligraphy is an everlastingtheme in the history of Chinese arts. They employ the same tools to express with identicalcultural connotation. Though the forms of expression are different, the intersection betweenChinese traditional painting and Chinese calligraphy is undeniable. This study starts with thepoetry of ZHAO Mengfu–“Rocks like the ‘flying white’(brush stroke of writing). Trees like thegreat seal script. To depict bamboo also demands conversance with the ‘Eight Methods’(ofcalligraphy).If there should be one who is capable of this, he must know the usage of the brush incalligraphy and painting is the same.”, and investigates the theories of relationships betweenChinese traditional painting and Chinese calligraphy through the history of Chinese arts. To takea panoramic view of the heritage of Chinese arts, the mutual supporting relationship betweenChinese traditional painting and Chinese calligraphy, and the instances of painters’ attainments incalligraphy and calligraphers’ attainments in painting have all clarified the mutual interactionand inseparable relationship between Chinese traditional painting and Chinese calligraphy. Thisresearch also investigates the existing art works to comprehensively analyze the relevancebetween Chinese traditional painting and Chinese calligraphy from three main aspects–thestructure, the layout and the artistic connotation. The findings demonstrate that all those threeaspects have proofed a fact of the intimacy between Chinese traditional painting and Chinesecalligraphy. Next, by illustrating XU Wei, Ba Da Shan Ren and WU Changshuo, author finds outthat, to a large extent, those great masters’ success relies on their proficient skills and coalescesof both Chinese traditional painting and Chinese calligraphy.
