| This book consists of two chapters. The first chapter is the introduction of Mr. Lin Lezhi’s biography, then followed by the discussion on why " Zhong dong zhan ji ben mo" was written and what its great significance wasThe first chapter presents Mr Lin’s family background and his major activities and contributions to China. As the missionary from American Methodist Episcopal Church, he arrived at Shanghai in the year of1860. During his47years’living in Shanghai, Mr Lin once taught English in " guang fang yan guan", did translation in " jiang nan zhi zao zong ju", he also played a role in the foundation of "The Globe Magazine (Wanguo gongbao)." which exerted a profound influence on later ages, he also contributed to the establishment of " zhong xi shu yuan " and " zhong xi nv shu"Three topics are discussed further in the second chapter. First topic that Why " Zhong dong zhan ji ben mo" was written is studied in the first part and then concluded with3reasons. First of all, Mr Lin experienced the great social changes brought by "The sino-japanese war ",which was worth recording. Secondly, doing the analyses of defeated causes is to finding a way out. Lastly, Mr Lin felt deeply in love with China for long. Mr Lin could not bear sitting by and watching the coming failure of China caused by blindly seclusion and arrogancy,thus he appealed political reform in quest of China’s prosperity by harsh criticism. Last part is the discussion of " Zhong dong zhan ji ben mo"’s historical value and extensive influence by making the "Treaty of Shimonoseki " as the breakthrough point. |
