In recent years, Chinese financial documentaries have been attracting intensive attentions both in the academic and the industry fields due to their booming development. Considering financial documentaries in China becoming more mature, in this thesis we reviewed the histories of the domestic and international TV documentaries on financial themes, and used different research methods to expound some issues on Chinese financial documentaries. At the beginning, we summed up some theories about documentary films, and then went into the development processes of Chinese financial documentaries. Base on that, an in-deep discussion on the essence of financial documentary was made. Finally, we focused on narrative strategies to explore more details of Chinese financial documentaries. In the introduction, purpose and significance of studying on financial documentaries were presented. This thesis carried out the research in the background of economic globalization, economic crisis and turbulences in the world financial system. Therefore, we collated the existing researches about financial documentaries, and briefly illustrated the basic idea of this topic, research methods and innovation points. This thesis introduced the concepts and theories of financial documentaries at first. Then this thesis traced back to the original definition of a documentary. Finally, we analyzed the development process of Chinese financial documentaries, and identified the development level and problems of Chinese financial documentary. On the other hand, we also analyzed some excellent financial documentaries from other countries. By comparing domestic and international financial documentaries, we found that foreign documentaries are better developed. Chinese financial documentaries are deeply influenced by the foreign ones. But they are surging rapidly and have formed their own styles. The prospects of Chinese financial documentaries are brilliant. This thesis focused on the analysis of narrative strategies of the financial documentary, which was detailed on the subjects of narrator, narrative language and narrative structure. At the beginning of the20th century, in structuralism and narratology, narrator, narrative language and narrative structure are the three main factors in narration. Narrator indicates the narrative clue and angle. Narrative structure decides the sequences in narration. The three factors are relative and indispensable. It sets higher demands for the narrator in a financial documentary, since it requests to state the incomprehensible economic phenomena, which is usually explained by using professional vocabulary, in terms of simple words that can be easy to understand by most people. To explore more details about the narrative language, this thesis launched the analysis from the spatial narrative language, the temporal narrative language and the cohesive narrative language. Through characterizing classic financial documentaries, it was found that the narrative language in the financial documentary is strongly logical and coherent. To study the narrative structure, we reviewed the related theories in structuralism and narratology as well as theories in foreign countries, and summarized the features of the narrative structure of the Chinese financial documentary. It was noted that the narrative structure plays a very important role in the creation of a documentary. Normally there is only one story covering the whole documentary, and some smaller stories are inserted in it as supplements. The different documentary narrative structure would work differently. By changing the narrative structure, it could be flexible to achieve different effects on the same documentary. Finally, we analyzed the narrative modes of foreign finance documentaries, and summarized the differences between the domestic and international financial documentaries. It was found that foreign documentaries have strong logic in contents, and always present with long dramatic moments of beautiful images in montages, which are good at expressing the true essence of what they offers to their audience in aesthetic terms. But Chinese financial documentaries still have large gaps.In addition, creative styles of financial documentaries were studied in this thesis. We compared some Chinese and foreign financial documentaries, and characterized them. Chinese financial documentaries were mainly analyzed. Examples, such as CCTV "Wall Street’,"The Power of Corporations’and ’BRICS’, were employed here as case discussions. Although the financial documentaries in China develop behind foreign ones, they are gradually forming a unique style, which is, in the view of the Chinese, in an objective way, to tell the truth of the global economic events by using Chinese expression. A documentary should like an international language which should be understood everywhere. Hence an excellent producer of a documentary not only needs to maintain his/her homegrown style in the documentary, but also needs to make it international and globalized. The early Chinese financial documentaries focused on learning from and imitating the creation modes of foreign documentaries. Nevertheless, with the fast development of documentary industry in China, the style of Chinese financial documentaries begins to have a worldwide influence. This thesis discussed the future influence of financial documentaries from following aspects:the function value, the expression, the social influence and so on. Then we proposed some suggestions in term of the creative view, the content and the expressive art in a documentary. At last, we pointed out the existing problems of China’s economy reflected by Chinese financial documentaries deserved people’s concerns. This thesis aims to open a platform for exchanging ideas and information on the studies of financial documentaries. It is encouraged to have a foresight to predict the future trend of financial documentaries.
