In traditional Chinese society, any of the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism occupies an important position either in terms of politics or of culture and ideology. In order to construct the legitimacy of their regime, generations of rulers will take advantage of the power of religious. In fact, religions also need support by royalty to keep themselves. I choose tang dynasty which is highly representative in three religions policy as the object to discuss in detail the interactive relationship between the royalty and magisterium. This essay make a discussion mainly divided into four chapters.Chapter One:First, explain the concept of religion and comb the various interpretation and definition of religion made by different Chinese and western scholars. Second, interpret the history of the concept of religion, and comb its’ change from denomination to religion. Then, discuss the communication between the Chinese and Western culture in the respect of religion. Third, describe the origin of the Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism in traditional Chinese society according to the literature.Chapter Two:This part discusses Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism’s social and political status before the Sui and Tang Dynasties in the Chinese society. I talk about it from three parts:Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, which are make the study malting for the next part and understand the historical cause of three religions policy in the early Tang Dynasty in a historical context.Chapter Three:It’s the core part of this essay. First, I explain the background in the emergence of the concept of three religions. Then, I mention briefly about the three religions policy in Sui Dynasty, to show the Tang’s in detail. Finally, I discuss three religions policy of Gaozu, Taizong and Gaozong respectively and make some presumption of the policies’cause.Chapter Four:This part mainly discuss the historical revelation brought by the three religions policy made by Tang rulers. Reviewing the history, when rulers can make wise use of three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, three religions also play a corresponding role. Accordingly, the existence of religion is the need of society, therefore we should leave some space for it’s survival and development. In Chinese traditional culture, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism all make an important contribution to social harmony and stability by moral enlightenment. Now, we can critically inherit the spirit of three religions for their enlightenment in our society.
