| Bon as the primitive and indigenous religion in Tibet. It is an important part of Tibetan traditional culture. And it exerts an enormous effect on the every aspects of Tibetan peoples’life by conjunction with Tibetan Buddhism. The influence is so overwhelming that it not only affects the culture, minds, behavior and temperament of the Tibetan people, but also conditions politic affairs, economic development and cultural formation of Tibetan area. So it is not exaggerating to say it is indispensable to the Tibetan culture as a whole. As Bon is the basis of the tibetology, it will be impossible for us to understand well the early history of Tibetan culture without having knowledge of Bon.Bon was firstly introduced into Aba district in Sichuan province in2A.D and reached its climax in6A.D. There are about35Bonpo monasteries totally in Aba district, while thirteen of them belong to Songpan county. As for sKyang tshang monastery, it is one of a famous Bonpo monasteries in Songpan with a time-honored history of700years. And it plays an exceedingly important part in the life of the local people such as in their works, studies and so on. So this paper is going to focus on sKyang tshang monastery and the candidate uses translations of Tibetan Bon historical texts and information provided during the field work by relevant informants to summarize the view of the sKyang tshang monastery and contrast its early history with its status quo to establish a provisional image of sKyang tshang monastery. This paper will mainly revolve around those aspects of sKyang tshang monastery’s early history, organization, economy, the life of monks and performance. As for the aspect of the contribution of sKyang tshang monastery has made to cultivate outstanding monks and scholars will be especially discussed in this paper. To be in short, a summary description of the monastery to conclude roles its played not only in the Tibetan culture,but also in the life of people of Songpan. Hoping it will be beneficial to the latter to refer to. |
