Money shortage is less money can’t apply the circulation. It is long-term cyclical distress of Chinese ancient social economy an important currency. But indifferent times, with reasons and extent for shortage of money are different, the government will take different measures which will produce different effects. In this paper, I take shortage of money as the research object, use Southern dynasties of the eastern Yangtze river basin as space-time scope to explore the cause and effect of the monetary problems comprehensively. According to the article, in the Eastern Jin Southern dynasty, commodity based currencies of China’s economy continued to move forward after Qin and Han dynasties. As the coin was used widely in Yangtze river basin, copper had become the main media of the commodity. At the same time, the number of copper to circulate on the market was clearly insufficient to meet the needs of commodity exchange, then money shortage phenomenon appeared. To cope with the money shortage, successive governments adopted a series of measures as follows:taking a waste of money with silks, increasing the amount of copper coins, reducing the weight of copper, dedicating to ancient coins, issuance of iron money. But because of various reasons and end up in failure. Government’s efforts failed that herald a more disorder monetary system. It made the shaped commodity money economy suffer setbacks. It is also one of the important factors regime change frequently in the Eastern Jin. However, money shortage is a monetary phenomenon in itself which does not mean that the monetary economyin Eastern Jin and Southern dynasty will decline. The commodity economy’s faintly discernible and the strengthening of dominant position of natural economy, which underscores an active and development of commodity economy during this period.The full text is divided into six major parts introduction and academic history review mainly introduces this paper’s research object this selected topic research significance and the review of academic history.Chapter one is to introduce commodity currencies sustained growth in the development of economy and the currency demand. It is to explore the social and economic background of money shortage phenomenon in Southern dynasties of the Eastern. Because of the large number of northern populations moving south and the southern minorities being out of the plain, the prevalence of tenancy and the well developed handicrafts and agriculture in Eastern jin Southern dynasty, on the basis of Qin and Han dynasties the commodity money economy continued to move forward and achieved a higher degree in Eastern Jin and the Southern Dynasties. It made the national financial revenue and expenditure increasingly tend to be monetized and currency demand sustain the growth.The second chapter is to introduce monetary policy and the phenomenon of money shortage in Eastern Jin and the Southern Dynasties. This chapter mainly based on eastern jin in the related literature and in recent years, the underground archaeological material come to the conclusion. The unreasonable monetary policy in Eastern Jin and the Southern Dynasties made money shortage phenomenon almost throughout the whole period. To some extent, it disturb the commodity transaction smoothly.Chapter three is to introduce the difficult famine relief and its failure. This chapter mainly introduces the government’s efforts. To solve the problem of money shortages, the government wasted of money with silks, reduce the weight of copper, allowed private casting and so on. But because of missing the essence of the money shortage problem, those efforts ultimately ended in failure.Chapter four is to introduce comprehensive analysis of money shortage long plagued in the Eastern Jin and Southern dynasty. This chapter is intended to explore the reason which the problem of money shortage long and cyclically plagued the Eastern Jin and the Southern Dynasties government. This article thought the main reason of money shortage was that commodity economy development made the currency can’t keep up with demand for a long time. At the same time, private coinage, cutting iron, storage, the government’s tax money and deflation policy aggravated the degree of money shortage.
