Teaching foreigners Chinese characters is one important parts of teaching Chinese as a second language. Without the teaching and learning of characters, it would be hard for foreigners to understand Chinese language and culture which demonstrates the essence of the country. Therefore, to promote Chinese language and Chinese culture, the teaching and learning of characters is necessary.According to those mistakes in the materials that I have collected, the most common mistake is the distortion of strokes, followed by character units combination mistake, which indicates the students are not familiar with basic Chinese character strokes and relationships between character units. As for the reading mistakes, the most outstanding mistake occurs on the tones which suggests at the beginning of learning Chinese, we should pay close attention to those four tones.After carefully analyzing the result of questionnaires, observation of classes and the statistics of all kinds of mistakes made by students, we concluded5main reasons for the factors:1,the students are behaving passively when learning Chinese, and then-basic knowledge about Chinese characters are very weak;2,the way that teachers teaching Chinese characters are both traditional and stereotypical, and some of the teaching processes are inappropriate and lacking while the teachers don’t know much about the deep meaning of Chinese characters themselves;3,Chinese characters have some special properties that are quite different from other languages;4,The students’ mother tongue has some influence on their Chinese studying;5,The school has not paid enough attention on Chinese teaching. Based on what we have found we think to improve the Chinese teaching of the school, firstly, the school itself should arrange more Chinese classes and involve Chinese into the evaluation of scholarships while the teachers should change traditional way of teaching and keep learning more about Chinese characters and complete their teaching processes.
