Reconstruction Or Misinterpreted: Foster Ecological Marxism Thought

The focus of this paper is on diference opinions about Foster’s EcologicalMarxism in domestic circles. J· B· Foster is famous for his emphashise of “the rift inthe human-earth metabolism”,and guadually become the new darling of the domasticscholars. However, when it comes to the appraisal of Foster’s Ecological Marxism,there are two opposing views mainly, one argues that Foster’s Ecological Marxismmakes good improvement in Marx’s Historical Materialism,while the other considersthat Foster’s Ecological Marxism misinterprets Marx’s materialism as a ecologicaltheory. Although the later is disadvantaged in number, it is trule worth investigating incontent.Based on the results of various studies on Foster’s Ecological Marxism at homeand aboard, I examined the background and main content of Foster’s EcologicalMarxism, through which I attempt to reach more objective evaluation of his wholeidea including ecological critique of capitaliam and future construction of EcologicalSocialist.The paper consists of four parts beside the preface.The first part mainlyemphasizes the creative concept of “metabolism rift”, which lies in the core ofdialectical relationship between man and nature in marxism from Foster’s point ofview; The second part systematically reveals the profound basis of Foster’s EcologicalMarxism in historical materialism, and clarifies root causes of ecological alienation incapitalist system; The third part covers the main point on the path of how to transformecological crisis in capitalist and achive sustainable development of human beingsand nature in Foster’s opinion; The forth part is the conclution, in which the paperpoint out that it is a great progress for Foster to develop an ecological dimension fromMarxism, and Foster’s Ecological Marxism has indicated much more for theconstruction of ecological civilization in our country.
