Objective:To clinically examine acupuncture treatment of simple obesity grounded on a combination of TCM theory and contemporary medical research methodology.Methodology:Literature research: This part had reviewed the datum of epidemiology and the etiology and pathology of obesity in china traditional medicine. The study of acupuncture treating obesity in clinic and experiment had been collected. And this part had also analyzed the literature of modern medicine. At last, the idea of this study had been brought forward on the basic before.Clinical research: 50 cases of patients diagnosed with simple obesity who fit the criteria of "excess heat in stomach and intestine" and "spleen deficiency with dampness retention" were utilized as objects of study. They were randomized into two groups: a therapy group and a comparison group. Both groups of patients exhibited no significant difference (P>0.05) in sex, age and TCM syndrome differentiation which allowed for reasonable comparison. Both groups were administered with acupuncture on the eight meridian points surrounding the navel. In the meantime, the meridian points of Zhigou, Neiting, Quchi, Hegu, and Shangjuxu were added to patients that belong to the "excess heat in stomach and intestine" type, while Shuidao, Qihai, Zusanli, Yinlingquan, and Sanyinjiao were added to the "spleen deficiency with dampness retention" type patients. As qi arrived in patients, electric needles were used in the therapy group. The needles were retained for 30 minutes. Each therapeutic session consisted of 10 times, and 3 therapeutic sessions were observed. As the therapeutic session ended, changes in the body mass index, body fat percentage, and circumference of waist, abdomen and buttocks before and after the session of both groups were measured. The total efficacy rate of both therapy and comparison groups were then comparatively analyzed. Results:The total efficacy rate for the therapy group was 88%, and 72% for the comparison group. The therapy group showed a higher efficacy rate than that of the comparison group( P<0.05 ). Obesity patients administered with both therapeutic methods obtained notable improvement on body mass, body mass index, body fat percentage and circumference of waist, abdomen, and buttocks. However, the improvement level of the therapy group was significantly higher than that of the comparison group. ( P<0.05 )Conclusion:The acupuncture method used to treat simply obesity is more efficacious when combining needles with electro-acupuncture than when administering the therapysolely with needles.
