Background:Esophagus cancer, which leads to400,000people die from all over the word, is one of the common malignant tumors of digestive system. Its morbidity and mortality varies from different countries. China is one of the areas prone to esophageal cancer in the world. However, there are still difficulties in discovering and diagnosing early nowadays. Most patients founded late and the prognosis is poor. The current treatment for esophagus cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy but the cure rate is low and there are much adverse reactions and serious defects that affect the quality of patients’life. In recent years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been involved in the treatment of esophagus cancer and the effect has been widely recognized. Many studies have shown that the Chinese medicine treatment for esophagus cancer has great efficacy. And the TCM has become one of the important means for treating esophagus cancer. Objective:Professor Jinchang Huang has been engaged in clinical study of TCM treatment for malignant tumors for twenty years. Professor Huang has his own unique experience on TCM treatment for esophagus cancer. This paper aims to summarize and collate the clinical experience of TCM treatment for esophagus cancer and to provide new ideas and methods in this field. Methods:By researching on the related discussion of modern Chinese medicine physicians for esophagus cancer and summarizing the name, etiology, pathogenesis, differentiation of symptoms and signs for classification of syndrome, and the usage of TCM for esophagus cancer. To summarize Professor Huang’s understanding of the pathogenesis, syndrome differentiation and treatment characteristics, treatment, the basic prescription for esophagus lung cancer by following him in visiting, rounding and teaching in the last two years. Results:According to the review of literature, I found that the modern physicians have already developed the basic shape of the awareness for esophagus cancer. The cause of esophagus cancer is divided into five etiologies:deficiency, depression, phlegm, stasis, and heat. On the dialectical typing, the most common types are syndrome of intermingled phlegm and Qi, syndrome of intermingled phlegm and blood stasis, syndrome of Yin injured by heat toxicity, deficiency of Qi and blood syndrome. Many modern physicians choose to treat the patient with the principle of strengthening the body resistance to eliminate pathogenic factors according to the different stages and syndromes of esophagus cancer. Choices of treating esophagus cancer varies from strengthening body resistance, regulating qi-flowing for activating stagnancy, eliminating phlegm and expelling blood stasis, heat-clearing and resolving masses. Many physicians have summarized their own special prescription, basic prescription to treat esophagus cancer during the clinical experiences by using medicinal herbs, which can increase efficacy and fully exhibit advantages of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine. Some physicians get a good result by acupuncture and manipulation in the field of treating esophagus cancer. My mentor, professor Huang, has been working on the tumor field of Medical Oncology for twenty years. He has formed a unique way of thinking and methods of diagnosis and treatment for esophagus cancer with TCM by combining the Classic theory of TCM, ancient medical writings, modern medical thinking and clinical experiences. Professor Huang believes that esophagus cancer is caused by phlegm, Qi depression, blood stasis, cancer toxin, heat pathogen and dryness. Disorder of Lung, stomach, spleen and kidney is the basic cause. He emphasizes the Yin and Yang syndrome differentiation and pay attention to the relationship between onset and progression of cancer and five evolutive phases and six climatic iactors. He also uses a combination of dialectical method. He takes the benefiting qi, nourishing blood, moistening dryness, dissipating phlegm, inducing dieresis, nourishing Yin, expelling blood stasis, anti-cancer and removing toxic substance as main method and summarizes and refines the basic prescription for treating esophagus cancer. He advocates the individual treatment, fully combing the external treatment of TCM and achieves great results. Conclusion:Professor Huang has been working as a doctor for more than twenty years. He formed a unique and complete dialectical treatment system of treating esophagus cancer and achieve great results. His experiences have strong clinical guiding effect and practical value and also can provide new ideas for clinical understanding and dialectical theory of governance for esophagus cancer.
