[Objectives] Firstly,This study is to provide an efficient instrument by the cross-cultural adaption of The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Patient (FATCOD) scale, and to evaluate it’s validity and reliability. Secondly, We tend to investigate the status and influential factors of nurses’ Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Patient in four3A hospitals.[Methods] Step1:After the five processes of the translation, synthesis, back translation, expert committee review, pretesting, we revised The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Patient (FATCOD) scale into a Chinese version. Step2:Convenient sampling method was used to obtain250nurses which came from four3A hospitals in Beijing city. After7days,30of them were retested. The software Spss17.0was used to do statistical description. Critical ratio and correlation coefficient were used to develop the intra-structure of the scale; The reliability analysis included Cronbach’s a coefficient and test-retest reliability. The validity analysis included content validity, construct validity and criterion-related validity. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and multivariable linear regression were used to describe the nurses’level of attitude toward care of dying patients and the factors that affect the nurses’level of attitude toward care of dying patients.[Results]1The Chinese version of The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Patient (C-FATCOD) scale was easy to understand. Most respondents finished the whole scale in5to10minutes, and the effective recovery rate of the scale was97.6%.2The reliability analysis:the Cronbach’s αcoefficient was0.805for the total scale,0.797for the C-FATCOD-I dimension,0.731for the C-FATCOD-II dimension. The test-retest reliability coefficient was0.803for the total scale,0.790for the C-FATCOD-I dimension.0.748for the C-FATCOD-II dimension.3The validity analysis:Exploratory principal component analysis of the items indentified that the two factors explained31.907%of the total variance; The Pearson correlation coefficient between the C-FATCOD and Bradley Scale was0.45(p<0.001).4The score of the C-FATCOD was102.99±10.92, the mean score was3.43±0.36; The score of the C-FATCOD-Ⅰ was53.59±7.86, the mean score was3.15± 0.46; The score of the C-FATCOD-Ⅱ was49.39±5.81, the mean score was3.80±0.45; place of work, Professional title, the attitude toward death, received the death education or hospice care professional education or training or not, work experience, these factors have influence on the attitude toward care of dying patient.[Conclusion] Based on the analysis, the Chinese version of the C-FATCOD has good validity and reliability. It is easy to perform, and should be a good instrument for the evaluation of the nurses’attitude toward care of dying patients; the majority of nurses in this study had a neutral to a moderately positive attitude toward giving care to people who are dying, but most of the participants reported themselves unlikely to talk about death with patients at the end of life and even educate them about death and dying. The score of FATCOD scale in our study was lower than the scores in the United States, Israel, Sweden and Japan yielded predominately similar results. We should be strengthened hospice education in school and in-service education.
