The environmental problems caused by persistent halogen organic pollutants have been a very important factor of environmental security and have drawn a lot of attention all over the world. To assess the correlation between concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), dechlorane plus (DP), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in air samples and human serum samples, we measured PBDEs, DP, DL-PCBs and OCPs in air samples from Weifang and Nanning and10composite samples which were pooled from the serum collected from305Weifang residents. Similarities and differences between air samples from Weifang and Nanning were compared. Also, concentrations of PBDEs, DP, DL-PCBs and OCPs between female and male and different age groups were compared.The mean concentrations of∑8PBDE (the sum of BDE-28,-47,-99,-100,-153,-154,-183and-209) in air samples from Weifang and Nanning were140ng/m3(75-240ng/m3) and0.48ng/m3(0.28-0.78ng/m3), respectively. BDE-209was the dominant congener. In Weifang air samples, gas phase samples contained only0.2percent of∑8PBDE while particle phase contained99.8percent of∑8PBDE. In Nanning air samples, gas phase samples contained25.2percent of∑8PBDE while particle phase contained74.8percent of∑8PBDE. DP was not detected in all the gas phase samples from Weifang and Nanning. The mean concentrations of∑DP (the sum of syn-DP and anti-DP) in particle phase samples from Weifang and Nanning were1.4pg/m3(0.85-2.1pg/m3) and1.0pg/m3(0.41-1.6pg/m3), respectively. Fanti in air samples from Weifang and Nanning were0.68-0.79and0.69-0.76, with the same mean of0.72. The mean concentrations of∑12DL-PCB in air samples from Weifang and Nanning were1.7pg/m3(1.4-2.2pg/m3) and0.89pg/m3(0.77-1.3pg/m3), respectively. PCB-118was the dominant congener. In Weifang air samples, gas phase samples contained44.3percent of∑12DL-PCB while particle phase contained55.7percent of∑12DL-PCB. In Nanning air samples, gas phase samples contained70.5percent of2DL-PCB while particle phase contained29.5percent of∑12DL-PCB. The mean concentrations of∑25OCP in air samples from Weifang and Nanning were330pg/m3(270-420pg/m3) and140pg/m3(110-160pg/m3), respectively. In Weifang air samples, gas phase samples contained88.0percent of∑25OCP while particle phase contained12.0percent of∑25OCP. In Nanning air samples, gas phase samples contained89.2percent of∑25OCP while particle phase contained10.8percent of∑25OCP. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) has the highest concentration compared to other OCPs in Weifang and Nanning air samples, which contained35.0percent and36.8percent of∑25OCP, respectively.The mean concentration of∑8PBDE in the10pooled serum samples from Weifang was240ng/g lipid (80-780ng/g lipid). BDE-209was the dominant congener, accounting for87.0%of∑8PBDE. There were no differences in PBDE concentrations between male and female samples, and the30-39year old group showed a much higher concentration than other age groups. The average concentration of∑DP was3.6ng/g lipid (1.4-11ng/g lipid). The average fanti values were0.35(range:0.18-0.47) and0.34(range:0.20-0.54) for males and females, respectively. There was no significant difference between concentration of∑DP and fanti values in samples from males and females. No consistent trend was seen between fanti and volunteer age. The20-29year old samples stand out as having higher DP concentrations. The average concentration of∑12DL-PCB was3.6ng/g lipid (1.6-5.8ng/g lipid). PCB-118was the predominant congener, accounting for42.7%of the total DL-PCBs. There was no significant difference between concentration of∑12DL-PCB in samples from males and females. The concentrations of∑12DL-PCB in both male group and female group were increased with age (20-59years old). The concentrations of∑25OCP in all the samples ranged from1.0to2.4μg/g lipid with a mean of1.5μg/g lipid. There was no significant difference between concentration of∑25OCP in samples from males and females. The concentrations of∑25OCP in female group were increased with age (20-84years old). In male group, the concentrations of∑25OCP were increased with age except in the≥60groups.In Weifang air samples, concentrations of PBDEs, DP, DL-PCBs and OCPs in gas phase, particle phase and total air samples were both correlated with concentrations of them in pooled serum samples from Weifang residents (r>0, p<0.01), suggesting that contact with air was an very important way for Weifang residents to intake these four kinds of organic halogen compounds.
