Shanghai Patriotic Health Movement In The 1950s

The patriotic health campaign which was launched by the broad masses underthe leadership of the Chinese Communist Party on a nation scale in the early1950swas in the context of relatively backward economy, cultural and health campaign.Shanghai Municipal Government combined with the citys specific situation and ledShanghai people actively in the powerful patriotic health campaign which hadbecome an important part of the national patriotic health campaign under theinstructions from the CPC central committee.The thesis was divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduced thebackground of the patriotic health campaign, and discussed separately from threeaspects which included the historical origins and international background of thepatriotic health campaign, and the Shanghai medical conditions before and after thefounding of the PRC. The second chapter introduced the policy and itsimplementation of the patriotic health campaign, and discussed from the general tothe special in three aspects which included the organizations and policies of the CPCcentral committees patriotic health campaign, the establishment of Shanghaigovernments institutions and organizations at all levels, and the concreteimplementation of Shanghais patriotic health campaign. Patriotic health campaign ofShanghai in the1950s could be divided into two phases:1952-1955for the firstphase of the campaign, the main task was sanitation and hygiene and eliminating theremnants evil consequences of the old days; reducing and eliminating infectiousdiseases such as cholera, measles and typhoid which was damaged to peoples livesand health.1956-1959for the second phase of the campaign, under the influence ofthe general line " go all out, aim high, and build a better, faster and moreeconomically Socialism", formed a new prospect of the campaign which took"eliminate the four pests" as the main task. The third chapter introduced the effectand reflection of the Shanghai patriotic health campaign. Achievements andexperiences of Shanghai patriotic health campaign was mainly expressed inimproving environment health and personal hygiene, forming a new fashion of sanitation and hygiene, great achievements had also been made in diseaseprevention, which had sped up the development of Chinas medical and epidemicprevention services; the shortages which included it ignored the objective law andmade the campaign and production practice divorce, unbalanced development of thecampaign and so on.Took history as a mirror, this article affirmed the achievement of the Shanghaipatriotic health campaign in the1950s, and summarized the experiences andshortages, which had significance to the current development of Shanghai patriotichealth campaign.
