Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet(1796—1874)played a very importantrole in the history of statistics. He urged to use the method of probability theory instatistics, under his influence, a new era in statistics was initiated. In my thesis, thethoughts of statistics of Quetelet have been discussed in detail. It consists of threechapters, including significant development before Quetelet, Quetelet’s life andstatistical method, and Quetelet’s thought on statistics. The first chapter introduces the statistical development before Quetelet, especially the thought of Political Arithmetic, which is closely connected withQuetelet’s statistical thought. This chapter includes the main representatives ofPolitical Arithmetic and their works and the process of combination of probabilitytheory and statistics. The second chapter gives a fairly detailed presentation of Quetelet’slife, including his parentage, education experience, teaching experience and researchexperience. He plays a transitional role in the history of statistics.Through theinvestigation of Quetelet’s life,we can find how he eventually went to the study ofstatistics and the source of his statistical thought. The third chapter is the main subject of this thesis. In accordance with thecontribution to the development of statistical thought, this chapter focuses on thethree parts, including the “average person” and moral statistics and statisticalmethods,on the removal of Quetelet’s statistical work.Through the reinterpretation of Quetelet’s statistical thought,we will bewell aware that Quetelet plays an important role in the history of the development ofstatistics.
