As the single superpower in contemporary world, the United States’ predominantmilitary capability has played a crucial role in supporting and propelling its rise, which iswell represented by US Navy. As the source of modern western sea power theory, the UShas long emphasized the key role of Navy in maintaining its international status andprotecting its national interest.The United States’ superpower status was ensured by the Second World War, whichalso assisted in US Navy’s final seizure of the1stplace in the ranking of global Navystrength. The dominant power US Navy displayed in the war was acquired through yearsof accumulation preceding it. Although the United States’ Navy construction plan couldbe dated back to as early as the end of the19th century, of which a relatively strong Navywas the result, the modern navy of US was set up after the First World War andincarnated on the basis of previous development.Judging from the history of US Navy,the20years between the end of the First World War and the eruption of the Pacific Warin1941were the crucial time for US Navy’s development and consummation. thedevelopment of US Navy had showed various periodical characteristics, in accordancewith the different domestic and international environments shaped by the specificpolitical, economical, military and diplomatic features of every stage.This period couldbe roughly divided into such3stages: the stagnation stage between1922and1933underrestrictions of a series of armament treaties; the resurrection stage between1933and1937when limitations were overcome and restoration began; the war preparation stagebetween1937and1941when it engaged in arms expansion with full strength. Theoverall strength and development of the US Navy was dissimilar during different stages,and the factors affecting its development also varied.This article attempts to analyze the three development stages of US Navy in detail after the comprehensive elaboration of US Navy’s overall condition between the end ofthe First World War and the eruption of the Pacific War from the above. In time thearticle attempts to illustrate the indispensable role US Navy played in the nation’s rise,and the accelerative effect modern Navy has on a nation’s progress.
