As a popular news subject directly related to almost all audience, police news report hasbeen “a rich mineral deposit of news”. The work of the public security department tends tobecome the target of public opinions. Sun Zhigang Event in2003and wild driving case inShenzhen are a reflection of the relationship development between police and media.In recent ten years, there has been a transition in the relationship between police andmedia from control management to cooperative fighting due to changes of power, benefits,media channel and means brought about by new media. Judging from its development, therelationship between police and media in new media age is still in a state of constantexploration. The favourable development world-wide can not cover up the conflict betweenpolice and media, such as the imbalance of supply and demand of information resources, thegap in information supply, and the concept of news value.This essay integrates the significant police reports between2003and2013and dividesthe development of Guangdong police reports into sections to conduct research. It draws onthe experience of some successful practice from foreign countries and probes into the subjectof how the public security department should provide voluntary news release and havefavourable interaction with public opinion supervision from media and network. This essayalso explores the question of how media should satisfy the curiosity of audience to beinformed of all the details of incidents without interfering with administration of justice andpolice. The author hopes that this essay will play a significant role in constructing aharmonious relationship between police and media in new media age.
