In recent years, China witnesses a rapid development in economy and tourism industry, many foreign friends regard China as a scared place for travelling, they want to learn about China from travelling. Foreign people come from different countries, although they have many different aspects, such as belief, culture, education background, etc. English is regarded as the world language. Tourism signs are viewed as the "voiceless guide" in the scenic spots, the face of the scenic spots, which play a great role in the development of tourist attractions, a proper and accurate translation of public signs is of great importance for the foreigners to get acquainted with Chinese culture, history and civilization. However, the quality of C-E translation of tourism signs is not satisfactory. The poor translated versions damage china’s international image. Poor translated versions make foreign friends confused and puzzled, what’s worse, making them misunderstood, which may cause serious troubles. So it is urgent and necessary for the requirement of well-translated versions.The author makes an effort to analyze the C-E translation of tourism signs from the perspective of functional approach in this thesis. She probes into various translation errors of tourism signs in some scenic spots, errors are classified and studied in the light of functional approach. Many examples are applied in the process of analyzing these existing errors. Based on these existing errors, the author proposes some strategies and suggestions for the C-E translation of tourism signs. The author hopes that the strategies and suggestions could provide some references to the tourism signs translation and the tourism signs could play their roles well with the joint efforts by translators, tourism signs makers as well as the relevant government and tourism administrations.
