English Translation Of Public Signs In Hospitals In China: A Functional Approach

The internationalization of humanity and language environment reflects the degree of internationalization where public signs serve as this function very well, for the quality of public signs indicates the degree of civilization and international image. As public signs in hospitals, they play a vital role in social development and communication.However translations of public signs in hospitals are far from being satisfactory. It is necessary to make a research on this field. The thesis is intended to study translations of public signs in hospitals from the functional perspective.With the Functional Approach as the theoretical basis, translations of public signs in hospitals are classified. Translators are supposed to adopt various strategies to achieve the intended function of the target texts.The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background. significance and organization of the thesis. Chapter two is an overview of the translations and limitations in previous study. Definition, functions and classification of public signs are also discussed. The third chapter gives a general introduction of the functional approach. i.e. Text Typology Theory and Scopos theory. Chapter four deals with translation errors of public signs in hospitals from the functional perspective and proposes some corresponding strategies for improving public signs translation in hospitals. The conclusion part is to sum up the translation research, limitation and further study.
