In recent years, English is more important as it gradually becomes a communicativetool for Chinese to communicate with people in other countries, which requires Chinesestudents to improve their reading ability to meet the development of the society. But in thetraditional reading classrooms, the explanation of the vocabulary and phrases and analysisof the sentence and text structures have been paid more attention rather than reading skills.And teachers spend most of time to explain the linguistic knowledge in traditional readingclassrooms where there exist little or even no teacher-student interaction andstudent-student interaction. More and more students are weary of such traditional teachingmethods, and lose their interest in learning English reading. So many scholars put forwardseries of reading models, among which the interactive approach is identified by most people.The interactive approach stresses the interaction between teachers and students, betweenstudents and reading materials, and among students when reading. Instructed by theinteractive approach of reading, students can activate their previous knowledge and makeuse of related background knowledge to understand the text.Based on related researches on interactive approach, this thesis mainly focuses on thefollowing three questions:Firstly, will the interactive approach help students to improve their reading interests?Secondly, can the interactive approach promote students’ teamwork?Finally, can the interactive approach help to improve students’ English readingproficiency?In the experiment, there are64students from Art and Science College of BohaiUniversity participates in it. Experimental Class is from Arts Department in which theauthor applies the interactive approach in the reading teaching, while Control Class is alsofrom Arts Department who receives the traditional reading approach. In this research, theinstruments include questionnaire, pre-and-post test and interview. As a result of theanalysis of statistical data, the outcomes about the effects of applying the interactiveapproach to the reading classroom teaching have been explored:Firstly, the interactive approach in the college reading classroom is helpful to improvestudents’ interests in English reading.Secondly, the interactive approach applied in the reading classroom is helpful tostudents promote their teamwork. Thirdly, the application of the interactive approach to reading classroom teaching canimprove students’ English reading proficiency.
