Hu Huaichen had extraordinary achievements in the history ofChinese modern literature. His novel theory and creations were gradually disappeared.Only few achievements were introduced in some articles and writings, and nobodycontacts his novel theory with Anhui culture background. This paper first starts fromthe culture background history of Hu’s novel theory, including Jingxian culture, hisfamily background, the time background also played an important role in the formingprocess of his novel theory. Second, Hu’s novel theory is divided into three periods bythree decades of modern Chinese literary history in the article, to discuss thecharacteristics of his novel theories of each period. In the period of Nanshe, HuHuaichen who continued the traditional novel concept treated notes novel as authentic.In the period of the May Four, his novel concept began to change and theenlightenment thought was clear. In the1930s, Hu Huaichen focused on theeducational function of novels. He also had a new insight about the essence of thenovel. Because Hu is an Anhui scholar, the Huizhou academic culture influences hisnovel theory from beginning to end. Third, why Hu Huaichen’s novel theory wasignored by literature history will be reflected in this paper.This paper has two significant values. It reveals its value from introductions of HuHuaichen’s novel theory. This work can make up the lack of academic research, andshows the thought path of the scholars between old and new literature. Second, asAnhui scholars, we have duty to study the novel theory of Hu Huaichen, especiallyattention to its close contact between Anhui academic cultures.
