Hu Huaichen(1886-1938),who also known as Jichen,Baozhen,Qiushan,etc.was born in an intellectual family in Jing County,Anhui Province.As the youngest son of the family,he was heavily influenced by family studies and received special care from his mother,father and brother.Hu received traditional enlightenment education in his hometown,as well as a new school education in Shanghai.Since then,Hu Huaichen has started a long writing career.Besides working as an editor,clerk,teacher,etc.,he diligently conducted research in different humanity fields,and creates many types of literature including novels.He was one of the important writers in the history of literary development in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China and made outstanding contributions to the development of modern short stories.The research topic of this article is Hu's short stories and related theoretical works.The article consists of an introduction and four chapters.The introductive part explains the research question and reviewed related literatures to comb the current status of research background.This part also explains the research methods and value of this study.The first chapter starts with the background of Hu 's novel creation,reviews the publishing industry environment in his era and the changes of the novel forms and styles at the turn of the century.This article reviews the historical development process of modern popular literature to provide reliable background information for understanding Hu's short stories and relevant theories.The second chapter lists Hu's theories related to short stories in Hu's writings,and summarizes Hu's,including the definition of short stories,the definition and classification of novels,the independent characteristic of novel,the sociological function of novels,theories of novel style,the utility of novels,and the related theories of novel creation,etc.This chapter aims to provide supportive theoretical information to form a deep understanding of Hu's short story throughout a mutual view with texts.The third chapter specifically analyzes Hu's short story texts.This part starts with a summary of Hu's novel material resource,especially those from his personal life experience.The chapter follows with the analyses of innovative contribution and limitation of Hu's short stories in terms of thought,content and form.Hu's social novels described poor people's living conditions,discussed social and political topics in a various way and documented family and social customs changes.Furthermore,the chapter analyzed Hu's narrative techniques,innovative text structure and expressions,showing Hu's contribution to the development of Chinese modern short stories.The chapter ends with a discussion in regard to the relationship between Hu and the Modernized New Literature.As the concluding chapter,chapter 4 reviews the previous content,summarizing the main points of Hu's short story theory and the main characteristics of novel creation,examines Hu's contribution to modern short stories and limitation in his creations in order to allocate Hu's position in modern popular literature history.
