Study On The Language And Culture Of The Place Name In Zhongxian

Placename is not only a reference of a region, but also a distinguished name thatpeople give to a natural or human geography entity. Accompanied by the emergenceof human society, placename came into being, and gradually expanded under thedevelopment of human society. As a symbol or a sign, placename is used torecognize and distinguish people’s living conditions between natural circumstancesand social circumstances. It is a window to open up a historical study as well as asketch of natural environment. The formulation of placename is a socialphenomenon.Usually, in the process of naming, people will consider psychologicalfactors, ways of thinking, living environment, and cultural conventions. However,there is a closed relationship between language and culture: language is the carrier ofculture; culture, to some extent, has an effect on the various elements of language.Therefore, as a special cultural phenomenon, culture carries abundantinformation of local colors and the research on it can surely be a reflection of localnature, history and folk-custom. Nowadays, more research on placename have beenconducted and have been explored in depth. Many of them are concentrated onancient cities, hot cities and second-tier cities. The research on administrativevillages can rarely been seen. Due to some social problem, the study of theplacename of Zhongxian county, a small town of Chongqing municipality, has beenlagged behind to a undeveloped state. What’s more, there is even no particularresearch on the language and culture study of Zhongxian county. Therefore, thisessay has broke through the limitation and regards the placename of Zhongxiancounty in Chongqing as main subject. It decides to focus on administrative villagesof county-level administrative units, so as to expand the research from the smallestunits. Apparently, this paper presents its ideas from linguistics and culturalperspectives. Through the analysis of phonetics and words-formation of placename,the discovery of local style pronunciation, the digging-out of the particularword-using and the investigation on the characteristics in its naming, the culturalsignificance is to be explored in the naming of Zhongxian county. At the same time,this dissertation has also put up some constructive suggestions on the non-standardphenomenon underlying in its placename.This paper, a multifaceted tentative research on the placename of ZhongxianCounty, fills the gap in the field of linguistics and cultural studies of Zhongxian County, deepens the understanding of people about the local culture there, alsoclearly helps to realize the cultural and ethnical significance underlying in theplacename, and has an important influence on the inheritance and development ofculture.
