Originally be used in making the ancient Byzantine icon paintings and better developed in the Middle age, and then unprecedented developed in early Renaissance. The Tempera classical painting techniques is a classical transparent indirect techniques which belongs to the western traditional painting. And the word "Tempera" refers to an English transliteration which means "blend" and "stir". It is a kind of painting which contains some emulsion compounds of special properties and also the water, glue and oil. And it often refers the painting which is of the egg emulsion glue of the cementing agent. And it makes a general reference that the Tempera is a sort of painting which contains the pigment of water solubility and colloidality binding agent. And the Tempera is an independent material system which differs from the oil painting and the modern acrylic material.By adding layers of white and continuously cover to dye, it makes the paintings present a transparent images of tiny soft effect. And this kind of classical transparent indirect techniques can bring the paintings aesthetic feeling and texture to the greatest extent. At the same time, the special properties of Tempera medium can also make the paintings present their most subtle shape.The series "Classical Portrait of the Lady" is an exploration which belongs to the classical Tempera paintings. And the following text discussed the exploration and development on the portrait series which based on the Tempera painting techniques. And the cause of the painting, the creation concept, the material and the techniques is also involved. And the text discussed the exploration and application on the portrait series of the classical Tempera painting skills at five aspects, including the research and the exploration, inheritance and learning, development and creation, production process and the thinking on the creation works.
