The thesis studies rewriting in the translation of Chinese classics into English as exemplified by Giles’s version of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi.According to Lefevere, rewriting means anything that contributes to constructing the "image" of the writer and\or a work of literature. Generally, it refers to the arrangement and processing such as translation, compilation, critics and edition. Under different historical circumstances, rewriting is manipulated by ideology and poetics. On this basis, rewriters rearrange the source text to some extent so as to cater for the current ideologies and poetics and to be accepted widely. The nature of translation and the diversities between Chinese and English determine the existence of rewriting in the English translation of Chinese classics.The study shows that in Giles’s version there is rewriting in structure, titles, relationships, cultural information and annotations. The translator rendered, edited, compiled and even criticized the work in order to introduce the Chinese culture, tradition and customs, with the rewriting methods of restructuring, paraphrase, substitution, omission\addition, explanation and transliteration. |
