Headwear culture has a long history in China, in which hair accessoriesoccupied an important position. Especially in the Ming dynasty, women’s hairpinscreated brilliant artistic achievement in both styles and patterns. This article sortedthe women’s hairpins in Ming dynasty and made a systematic summary, in which theauthor had a better understanding of women’s hairpins especially for their styles andpatterns. The author also tried to refine their cultural implication, excavate thecultural and artistic value, and figure out their relationship with modern jewelrydesign. This article combined the literature and archaeological findings together tostudy the styles and patterns of women’s hairpins in Ming dynasty. First of all,according to the course of history, the origin and evolution of hairpins weresummarized, in which the author focused on the change of hairpins. Afterwards, thisarticle explored the rules for the wearing manners, styles and patterns of women’shairpins, as well summarized their development history in Ming dynasty anddescribed the characteristics of women’s head. Based on historical records, literaturenovels, famous paintings and unearthed hairpins in Ming tombs, the author made asystematical summary and recovered their wearing method. According to the styleand pattern characteristics of women’s hairpins in Ming, the author also analyzedtheir application in modern jewelry. Finally, this article concluded that the hairpins inMing showed characteristics of noble cultural connotation and the beauty ofornaments, sample model, artistic conception and artisans.
