The Application Of Penglai-Myth Theme In Jewelry Design

In ancient times,Penglai Myth spread widely in eastern china,especially ineastern shandong province. Facing incomprehensive phenomena such asmirage,people tried to explain them in legends. As a result,they believed in the existof Penglai paradise.Penglai Myth opened the curtain of Chinese ocean culture. Forthousands of years, developing Penglai Myth is always an important motif of Chineseliterature and arts.Penglai Myth has different meaning in different periods,and the jewelry in thetheme of Penglai Myth also present different characteristics. This article try to findout the differences of Penglai Myth and its influence on artworks. Besides, the papermakes an attempt to find out the elements of Penglai Myth which can be applicated tojewelry design.The elements can be used and inheritated in jewelry as designinspiration.In this paper, the characteristics of Penglai Myth in different periods aresummarized,which includes the origin, thrift and evolvement.Under the influence ofimmortality thought, many artworks are related to Penglai Myth.This paper tries toanalyze the characteristics of the most representative artworks,such as metal, ceramicsand stone artifacts. As a sort of artworks,jewelry is also influenced by Penglai Myth.From specific and abstract aspects, the auther summarize the elements of PenglaiMyth which can be used in jewelry design. Until today,many of them are applicated tojade and precious metal articals. A study of the inheritance and innovation of modernjewelry in Penglai-Myth Theme is made in this paper. Combining the comprehensionof with modern life, several jewelry with the theme of Penglai Myth is designed andthe manuscripts is displayed. At the same time,the mentality of designing is alsointrosduced:the traditional theme, the realistic feeling and the colorful form. Theformula can be applicated to modern jewel design.
