In recent years, with the deepening of economic globalization, nations around theworld have been becoming increasingly close to make the exchanges of economy andculture increasingly frequent. In particular, the international conferences have been heldfrequently in China. Therefore, the role of interpretation is becoming increasingly importantespecially in the serious conferences and press during the annual session of NationalPeople’s Congress (NPC) and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)in China. In these press conferences, many idioms, proverbs and verses which load withabundant cultural connotations bring tough problems for interpreters as well as difficultiesin the process of interpretation to impede the understanding of the audiences. The issueswhich are posed by culture-loaded words and expressions in the interpretation have been amatter of concern for the scholars and interpreters from home and abroad. Thus, the studyof these culture-loaded words and expressions is of vital importance not only for the studyof linguistics but also for all people who are eager to understand Chinese splendid culture. On the basis of the previous studies, this thesis will probe for the interpretive strategies ofthe culture-loaded words within the theoretical framework of Interpretive Theory with aview to make their interpretation more appropriate and decent. This thesis mainly focuses on the interpreting strategies of culture-loaded expressions atpress conference from the perspective of interpretive theory. The interpretive theory wasput forward by Paris School which was represented by Seleskovitch and Lederer. Theessential concept of the theory is to grasp the sense expressed by the addressor instead ofthe original language form; and the central task of interpreter is to de-verbalize the outerskin of the original language with the participation of cognitive complements and conveythe sense accurately to the target audience. The research method adopted in this thesis is aqualitative study based on the data collected from the speech at the press conference afterthe conclusion of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s PoliticalConsultative Conference (CPPCC) sessions from2008to2012. This thesis begins with anintroduction to the status quo of the research; then the theoretical framework of the thesis –the interpretive theory is introduced. In accordance with the theory and on the basis ofprevious relevant studies, the thesis sums up the features of press conference interpretingand culture-loaded expressions interpreting; and thus further improve the criteria for pressconference interpreting and qualifications III of press conference interpreters. Afterwards, the thesis summarizes five major interpreting strategies that are most often adopted at pressconference in coping with the interpreting of Chinese culture-loaded expressions with theapproach of Interpretive Theory. They are literal interpreting, explanatory interpreting, contextual interpreting, ree interpreting and logical relationship processing. The study of the culture-loaded words is a long-term and arduous task. Culture-loadedwords are the most direct and sensitive reflection of the cultural history and customs in thelanguage level. Thus, the headway in the translation of culture-loaded words exerts asignificant effect on the development of the language and the communication of nations. The Interpretive Theory is one of the most important theories in the translation theories, inthat it has very important significance to study the interpretation of the culture-loaded underthe instruction of the Interpretive Theory.
