Elementary Chinese character teaching is the basis and key points in the teachingof Chinese characters, and it is an important part of TCFL. This paper started from allsorts of difficulties that the European and American students encountered in theprocess of Chinese character study, such as saw a Chinese character glyphs but don’tknow the pronunciation of the Chinese characters, saw a Chinese character glyphs butdon’t know the meaning of the Chinese characters, wrote more or less strokes than aChinese character have and so on. And then, under the guidance of the relevanttheories, this paper analyzed the reasons carefully from the level of individualstudents, characteristics of Chinese characters and teachers’ professional qualities ofthe difficulties that the European and American students encountered in the process ofChinese character study. On the basis of these, this paper proposed some specificteaching strategies from the level of teaching methods, guidance of the teacher andpractices. This paper thought that the mastery of the teaching methods need to stand inthe perspective of the rules and characteristics of Chinese characters, the guidance ofteachers may from the students’ concepts, students’ interests, and students learnstrategies to position, and in practice, teachers should pay attention to the combinationof teaching and practice, the targeting on the content, the diversity of the form and soon. It is hoped that this study can improve the efficiency of Chinese characterteaching.
