This thesis is an attempt to discuss the process of consecutive interpreting in the perspective of Relevance Theory. Relevance Theory regards human communication as an ostensive-inferential process which contains both ostensive and inferential behaviors. While consecutive interpreting is a kind of communication whose specialty lies in including two ostensive-inferential processes. The author analyzes consecutive interpreting from these two processes, one is the process of comprehending source language, and the other is the process of producing target language. In the two processes, the main principles of Relevance Theory have certain guidance on choosing interpreting strategies, for example, interpreters should reconcile different cognitive environment, retain the contextual effect of the source language and ensure the processing effort rewarding. This thesis probes into the subject by analyzing specific examples on the basis of theory, taking Relevance Theory as a theoretical basis and government press conference as an example to classify and analyze the main strategies used in the process of interpreting. It aims to show that applying main principles of Relevance Theory to the process of consecutive interpreting is applicable. The author wishes the strategies summarized in this thesis can be of some guidance for interpreting practice.
