Standardizing The English Translation Of Chinese Terms For Grammatology

New developments in general grammatology, comparative grammatology, and paleography have led to a new specialized vocabulary that has not yet been standardized. Particularly needed is the standardization of the English translation of the Chinese terms for grammatology. Scholars’different understandings of the connotations and denotations for terms in grammatology are not only when conducting new lines of research, but also when communicating research with an international audience.Presently, the translation of terms used in grammatology is hindered by the lack of consensus and lack of accuracy, leading to an unsystematic, overly-diverse range of definitions. Needed is a standardized approach to grammatology that is grounded in the six basic principles of the English translation, namely, accuracy, consistency, habituation, simplicity, pertinence and back translation.This comparative study analyzes the English translation of three sets of data: classic works of Chinese grammatology, specialized Chinese dictionaries for linguistics, and Chinese textbooks in linguistics. This analysis aims to clarify the Chinese and English translation of Chinese terms for traditional grammatology, to organize the newly-emerged terms of grammatology. to improve the accuracy of using the terms, to standardize the thesis abstract of the grammatology, and to unify the terms we use in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.After analyzing these texts, we will recommend the use of a common set of English terms for the translation of Chinese grammatology. Although this study will not consider every single term used in grammatology, it will establish a system for regulating translation based on the most commonly used.This thesis is composed of five chapters:The first chapter states the research objectives and the research value. It also presents the current research situation for the English translation of the grammatology terms. The second chapter analyses the issues of the translation guided by the six basic principles of English translation. The third chapter introduces the research materials and discusses the terms we use to do the grammatology research. The fourth chapter compares terms from different text books used in teaching Chinese as a second language. The fifth chapter is a conclusion to the pre-existing and newly-emerged terms.
