The Medium In American Contemporary Video Art:a Case Studies Bases On The Journal Of October

In the field of art theory, medium has become an important topic, which aroused interdisciplinary studies to respond, by following the traditional and the new reality of multiple disciplines, including communication, journalism, sociology and fine arts. Essentially being based on fine arts, starting with literature review, this dissertation devoted to the study on attention and analysis of the American arts journal of October with the medium of contemporary video arts.Submitting to the academic authority of October, taking Rosalind Krauss, Annette Michelson, Hal Foster, the October’s Editors, and some other "new history of art critics" as its heart, the accreditation mechanism embedded the video research into the context of artistic practice and identified the works of art with the products of cultural industry, which made each vision expression accessible to the cultural discuss important driving force in arts, science and the other related field, which further more, promoted the specializing and theorizing process of the knowledge production of American contemporary art, leading to form the explicit guidance to the development of contemporary arts.The thesis is devided into four parts, which consists of "October and medium of contemporary art","From the ’copy’ to ’participation’ in contemporary art","Medium as exhibition" and "The medium of contemporary art". On the research methods, the technical analysis of the visual medium, through text origin analysis and cultural interpretation combined with logical thinking to show the theoretical focus of the problem of the medium in the contemporary video arts.For innovation and development of art criticism, building a medium discussion paradigm of contemporary video art became the primary task in front of October and the study of American contemporary arts. In the last forty years, October has been guiding and enriching the contemporary art theory research from the revolution of formalism to the inspection to building their own standards of medium, which in fact, has generated another theoretical forms basing on criticism and reflection to the existing theory of ideological: on one hand, October has acquired the predominance of American contemporary art criticism that had a profound impact; On the other hand, its research and analysis on the medium issues and metaphor will better serve to understanding the medium of contemporary arts, which has more extensive prospects.
