On The Application Of "Deverbalization" In Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpretation

Chinese and English differ at lexical, grammatical and cultural levels; therefore, in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation, interpreters cannot produce high-quality interpretation simply by adopting the approach of form-based interpretation. In particular, in impromptu speeches, Chinese speakers may repeat, hesitate, or articulate incomplete sentences, which requires interpreters to analyze and remove redundancies and ambiguity, so as to express the intended message of the speakers.The Interpretive Theory was developed in Paris in the1960s. The theory holds that translation and interpretation follows the process of understanding, deverbalization and expression. Deverbalization, to put it simply, means that the interpreter understands the message of the source text,"forgets" the structure of source language, and articulate the intended message of the author/speaker in the target language in a natural manner.This thesis studies the correlation between the extent of deverbalization and the quality of Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation. The hypothesis is that in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation, the extent of deverbalization is positively correlated with the quality of simultaneous interpretation. An empirical study of10respondents is conducted to test the hypothesis. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used to analyze the results. The study verifies the hypothesis, i.e. the extent of deverbalization is positively correlated with the quality of Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation. The results may provide some reference for further empirical research in simultaneous interpretation, and can encourage more students to "deverbalize" in their interpretation to improve interpretation quality.
